Let’s dive into Road Base, one of the most practical and widely used materials in construction and landscaping across Perth, Western Australia.

What is Road Base?

  • Road Base is a compacted mix of crushed rock, gravel, sand, and fines (dust-sized particles).

  • It’s engineered to create a firm, stable surface that resists shifting under weight or moisture.

  • The stones are angular, helping them lock together when compacted.

  • Colours can range from grey, cream, bluish, or reddish, depending on the local quarry materials.

What is Road Base Made From?

  • Typically made from:

    • Crushed limestone (common in Perth)

    • Crushed granite

    • Crushed basalt

    • Recycled concrete (sometimes used as a sustainable option)

  • Contains:

    • Coarse aggregates (for strength and drainage)

    • Fines (for binding and compaction)

What is Road Base Ideal For in Perth, WA?

Road Base is perfect for:

  • Driveways & vehicle access ways — withstands vehicle weight

  • Under pavers, concrete slabs, or artificial turf — provides a stable sub-base

  • Hardstand areas (e.g. parking bays, sheds)

  • Rural firebreaks or tracks

  • Pathways and verges needing durability

  • Temporary surfaces for construction traffic

Perth Advantages:

  • Handles sandy soils common in Perth by providing stability

  • Withstands dry summers and sudden downpours without turning to mud

  • Readily available from quarries around the metro area

📏 Recommended Thickness for Road Base Layers

  • Light traffic paths or pedestrian areas:
    🔹 75–100 mm (3–4 inches) compacted

  • Driveways or heavier vehicle areas:
    🔹 100–150 mm (4–6 inches) compacted

  • Under concrete slabs or paving:
🔹 Usually 75–100 mm depending on load

Road Base should always be laid in layers (max 75mm thick) and mechanically compacted for strength.

How to Maintain Road Base Surfaces

  • Compact thoroughly during installation.

  • Top up low spots with fresh road base and compact again.

  • Prevent water pooling — maintain correct fall or slope.

  • Weed control:

    • Install weed mat before laying

    • Spot spray or manually remove weeds

  • Re-compact areas if they become loose over time.

  • For driveways, consider adding a thin decorative topping (like gravel) over road base for aesthetics and dust control.

Road Base vs Red Compacting Gravel

  • Road Base = generally grey, limestone-based in Perth, very high compaction strength, used structurally.

  • Red Compacting Gravel = red colour, aesthetic choice, can also compact but often used where appearance matters.

Bottom line: Road Base is one of the most economical and stable foundations for all kinds of landscaping and construction in Perth.
