PASTEURISED MULCH

Pasteurised Mulch is a superb product for Perth gardens and landscapes.

What is Pasteurised Mulch?

Pasteurised Mulch is a type of organic mulch that has undergone heat treatment (pasteurisation) to kill weed seeds, pathogens, and pests. Unlike raw mulches, pasteurised mulch is clean, safe, and more stable, making it an excellent choice for gardens concerned about introducing weeds or diseases.

What is Pasteurised Mulch?

  • Pasteurised Mulch is a type of organic mulch that has undergone heat treatment (pasteurisation) to kill weed seeds, pathogens, and pests.

  • Unlike raw mulches, pasteurised mulch is clean, safe, and more stable, making it an excellent choice for gardens concerned about introducing weeds or diseases.

What is Pasteurised Mulch Made From?

Pasteurised mulch is usually made from:

  • Shredded green waste — prunings, branches, leaves

  • Bark fines or wood chips

  • Composted organic matter in some blends

These materials are:

  • Shredded and composted, then

  • Heated to at least 55-65°C (pasteurisation) for a minimum period to kill weed seeds and pathogens

The final product is a stable, fibrous mulch with a pleasant, earthy smell.

What is Pasteurised Mulch Ideal For in Perth, WA?

Pasteurised Mulch is ideal for:
Garden beds — keeps soil cool and retains moisture
Around shrubs and trees — reduces water loss and weeds
Native gardens — safe for Australian natives as it’s low in nutrients compared to compost
Vegetable beds — when used as surface mulch (not mixed into soil)
Landscaping projects — neat, uniform look

Benefits in Perth:

  • Great for Perth’s sandy soils, where water retention is crucial

  • Helps reduce watering costs in hot WA summers

  • Lowers soil temperatures and protects plant roots from harsh sun

Recommended Thickness for Pasteurised Mulch Layers

  • General garden beds:
    🔹 50–75 mm (5–7.5 cm) thick

  • Around trees and shrubs:
🔹 75–100 mm (7.5–10 cm) for extra weed suppression

  • Vegetable gardens:
🔹 Thin layer of 30–50 mm (3–5 cm)

Avoid piling mulch against plant stems or trunks — keep a gap of 5–10 cm to prevent rot.

How to Maintain Pasteurised Mulch

  • Top up annually — mulch decomposes over time, so add fresh mulch to maintain desired thickness.

  • Check for compaction — fluff it up occasionally with a rake to let air and water penetrate.

  • Monitor weeds — though pasteurised mulch reduces weeds, some seeds can still blow in.

  • Water mulch in after spreading — helps settle it and prevent blow-away in windy Perth weather.

  • Keep clear of stems and trunks to prevent rot and pest issues.

Key Benefits of Pasteurised Mulch in Perth:

✅ Clean and weed-free
✅ Excellent moisture retention
✅ Suppresses weeds naturally
✅ Improves soil structure as it breaks down
✅ Safe for native and ornamental gardens
✅ Reduces heat stress on plants in Perth summers

Pasteurised Mulch vs. Raw Mulch:

  • Pasteurised mulch → heat-treated, cleaner, fewer weed seeds

  • Raw mulch → cheaper, but higher risk of weeds and disease
