FOGO Compost is a nutrient-rich compost product made from residents’ organic waste collected through the council’s FOGO (Food Organics, Garden Organics) program. It’s part of the circular waste management system where food scraps and garden vegetation are diverted from landfill and instead processed into compost that can be used to enrich soil and support local gardening and landscaping.
🌱 Improves soil health – adds organic matter, improves structure and aeration
💧 Better water retention – helps soil hold moisture, reducing watering needs
🌿 Supports plant growth – provides slow-release nutrients for gardens
♻️ Reduces landfill waste – diverts food and garden waste from landfill
🌏 Cuts greenhouse emissions – less organic waste decomposing in landfill
🔄 Closes the loop – turns household waste back into a useful local resource
✅ Safe & high quality – certified to Australian Standard AS4454
What “FOGO Compost” actually is
FOGO Compost is the finished compost product created from the food organics and garden organics collected in lime-green lidded FOGO bins provided to households.
The compost is processed and packed locally in WA by a company called Purearth in Western Australia.
It’s certified to Australian Standard AS4454, meaning it meets quality and safety standards for compost used in gardens and soil improvement.
What you can use it for
FOGO compost is designed to improve garden soil and help plants thrive:
Soil conditioning
Mix it into the topsoil in garden beds to boost organic matter and nutrient content.
Mulching
Spread over beds as a mulch layer to help retain moisture and suppress weeds.
Why this matters
The FOGO system reduces the amount of organic waste sent to landfill by collecting food scraps and garden waste separately and turning them into a beneficial product instead of landfill emissions. This is in line with Western Australia’s waste strategy and supports a circular economy approach to resource use.
